Table of Dignities
Every planet will have a certain dignity, based on the zodiac sign that it's in. There are the following types of dignities:
- Domicile: the planet falls in the zodiac sign that it rules (E.g. Mars in Aries)
- Exaltation: the planet falls in a zodiac sign that it is happy in (e.g. Mars in Capricorn)
- Detriment: the planet falls in the zodiac sign opposite it's domicile placement (e.g. Mars in Libra)
- Fall: the planet falls in the zodiac sign opposite to its exaltation sign (e.g. Mars in Cancer)
An additional dignity that is recognised is triplicity: when the planet falls in a sign that trines (has the same element as) its rulership sign - for example Jupiter is in triplicity in Aries, because Jupiter rules Sagittarius, and Sagittarius trines Aries (both fire signs).
When a planet is in its domicile or exaltation, it is dignified. Dignified placements have an easier time, as the energy of the planets flows more naturally. For example, someone with Mars in Aries is naturally assertive and energic.
When a planet is in its detriment or fall, it is debilitated. Debilitated placements are not a sign of back luck nor bad character, but they often impose additional challenges in the person's life due to the incompatibility between the planet's energy with that of the zodiac sign's. For example, natives with Moon in Capricorn (detriment) have a tougher time nurturing themselves and others as they are instinctively more serious and goal oriented. But, this does not make them cold, or bad mothers or anything like that. It's just a challenge for the native, which may turn into a problem if they don't know how to deal with it in a healthy way.
When reading the birth chart from a personality perspective, it is worth pointing out planets which have a particular dignity and what it entails.
